That’s the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard of. I’ve never even drank wine that cost that much so why pay that when you can sooo easily make one of these gorgeous wine bottle hurricane lanterns for near nothing? You just need to drink up a bottle or two of your favorite wine and grab a glass cutter. I found a great tutorial to show you how it’s done. Here’s the basics of how it works… First, to remove the labels, soak your wine bottles in soapy water for about 20 minutes to loosen the glue. Then you can scrape the labels off. The tutorial will show you how to rig up and quick and easy little frame so you can score a straight line around your bottle with your glass cutter. Next, you’re going to use a little science to remove the bottom off the wine bottle. You see, glass expands when heated and retracts when cooled (that’s the science part). So you’re going to apply hot water to the scored line either by dipping the bottle in a pot of hot water or by pouring the water over the scored line. Next, to contract the glass, dip the bottle into a pot of cold water. When you hear a pop, you’ll know the line has cut through the glass. You may have to jiggle the bottom of the bottle a bit to separate the two pieces. Once separated, simply use a sanding block to beff out any sharp edges.
